I love using the jump rope (also known as skipping rope). I’m passionate about jumping ropes as an activity, passionate about the equipment, and I’ve spent a lot of time trying to find the ideal jump/skipping rope.

Picking the Best Jump Rope
As we have seen above, there are lots of great reasons to exercise by jumping rope. However, the process of buying the right jump rope is extremely tricky.
There is a lot more available than the old, basic jump rope. There are numerous kinds of jumping ropes on the market – everything including a basic rope and string combo costing a few dollars to MIT-friendly cables with built-in handles plus bearings costing more than $50.
Given all of that, which jump rope is the one worth purchasing? Not surprisingly, this is a hard question to answer.
It is impossible to suggest a specific jump rope (skipping ropes) because the most desirable skipping rope for you will vary, depending on:
- Your combat sport
- What you want to accomplish in practice
- Whether you are trying to learn fancy gimmicks or wanting to use it for a vigorous exercise regimen

It is likely that there are superior specialty ropes on the market for Cross Fitters, speed jumpers, double unders, and budget-minded individuals. Even so, if you want a jump rope that does everything and does it very well, this is your jump rope. And let’s be honest – is paying $35 too much for an item that will give you years of use? Buddy Lee uses this model in his jumping rope videos, even though he sells other jump ropes.
I have also sampled his Aero Speed jumping rope, featuring fancy, short aluminum handles, but I still prefer the Rope Master, which has longer handles. If you are wanting a rope for advanced and trick jumping, the Rope Master is superior to the Aero Speed. If you are wanting a jump rope for Cross Fit, Speed jumps, or double unders, the Aero Speed might be the better rope choice (because it’s lightweight, not as big, and promotes speed jumping). Despite that, Rope Master is great for both overall jump roping and trick jumping.
Best Budget Jump Rope
Boxer’s Jump Rope – ($6.93 Standard Price)
Although it’s called a Boxer’s Jump Rope, it isn’t only for pugilists, but it’s for everyone. It’s fast moving, long lasting, has a great feel, and is perfect for fun and exercise. It’s the best budget jump rope. Costing less than $7, it is a great bargain. I prefer the Rope Master over the Boxer’s Rope because it’s more smooth, has greater control, gives a great cracking sound, and provides superior feedback, but it costs five times more. The Boxer’s Rope is a great choice for a discount jumping rope.
Picking the Best Jumping Rope
Selecting the correct jumping rope can be both a breeze and a headache.
It is not difficult to go into a sporting goods shop, purchase a basic jumping rope at a cheap price while not being able to know the proper size, understand cordage, and the result will be buying a jump rope that’s only okay or one that’s straight up weird.
Picking the correct jumping rope for your needs is most important to receive the maximum benefits of jumping rope exercise.
Some might say that it is irrelevant which jumping rope you buy, that you just need to buy a jumping rope. However, this is not the case.
Listen, I’m trying to learn all I can about jumping rope (and working tirelessly to excel at all the many tricks so my boxing jumping rope training doesn’t get boring and monotonous), I know that which jumping rope you select makes a big difference in your rope execution and general training.
You may fall in love with jumping rope or end up despising it, and what you select will have a great deal to do with how you feel. The wrong rope (understand that wrong is synonymous with an inexpensive rope) will cause you to trip, won’t feel right, won’t allow you to gain speed, and you won’t be able to do any cool stunts with it, either.

Fitness Length: For this kind of jump roping, you will need something that will loop around 6”-10” as it swings over. The short rope span allows you to twirl faster, making completing double unders easier (These are jump rope maneuvers where you swing twice).
Speed Length: This kind of jump roping is where you are concentrating on reaching maximum speed. You will need a rope ranging from 2”-6” spacing over the head to the top of the swing. However, speed jumping is a very technical kind of jumping, and is only performed by professional jumpers who have lots of experience.
Freestyle Length: For this style of jumping, you will usually use longer ropes giving you greater length for swinging back and forth. The appropriate space from the head and top swing should be from 12”-24.”
Finding the Correct Jumping Rope Size
Keep in mind when you are measuring to get the proper jumping rope length corresponding to your height, be sure to measure starting at the tips, and not just the cord length.
- Hold the rope handles, and stand in the middle as you pull the handles up next to your body while you’re standing straight.
- The tips should reach the armpits. If they don’t, the rope is not long enough for beginning jumpers.
- Remember that there can be variations because the rope will be held differently by different people (holding it higher or lower while the handles are being turned) and arm length (long arms versus some short arms). Usually, beginning jumpers are better off using a rope that is typical for their height as noted in the following chart, while experienced jump ropers will want a somewhat smaller rope.
The rope tips should meet the armpits. While jumping rope, it should barely touch the surface under you. If the rope doesn’t touch the surface you’re standing on, it’s not long enough. If it touches the surface at your feet, it needs to be shorter. Experienced rope jumpers will likely require a smaller rope than the sizes given on the table below.

Choosing the Jumping Rope Material
There are jump rope material that is more durable, and there is other material that will disintegrate if it is used with unforgiving flooring like concrete. Remember that if are going to jump rope on harsh flooring, PVC or cable ropes will last longer. Materials like Licorice or Vinyl are going to last a very short time.

The rope materials favored by many jump rope users are PVC plastic or vinyl. Both materials are ideal for beginning or advanced jumpers. You could buy a regular, inexpensive jumping rope for $5 to $7 and it will last for a decent amount of time.
Matching Jump Rope Material with the Right Experience Level
The following are standard jumping rope categories linked with the kind of material most appropriate for that amount of jump time:

Sporting Jumping Rope Materials
A jumper’s selection of jumping rope fabric can vary based on your base sport, although in a standard jumping rope session, you can use any basic jumping rope.
Boxers generally prefer PVC or licorice. For instance, Floyd Mayweather jumps using a mid-grade handled Amp Rope. These ropes are easy to use, inexpensive, and are for jumping by occasional, novice, or experienced jumping rope users.
Muay Thai fighters prefer the traditional and weighty PVC ropes. These ropes are much thicker than standard jump ropes. The handles are usually meaty and wooden. I don’t use these ropes because they aren’t conducive for using to practice speed or timing. However, they will assist you in conditioning and strengthening your shoulders due to their heaviness.
When I began jumping ropes in Thailand, I used the PVC ropes for several years. Since I am really concentrating on jumping rope and working at getting better at it, I am not using them anymore. However, you may want to use one of these ropes because it is what Thai fighters tend to use. The Twins Jumping Rope is one of their favorite brands. I can’t stand this rope, but since Thai fighters use them, you might want to use them.
Cross Fitters / Fitness Jumpers usually prefer the speed jumping ropes with metal, 90◦ connects, or ball swivels. They will help you to skip quickly, jump doubles or triples, and have an extremely fast jumping session.
Jumping Rope Trick Artists like to jump with freestyle ropes. These ropes feature extra-long handles. The trick jumpers tend to use cords made of beads.
Avoid These Rope Fabrics
My thoughts on unsuitable rope materials won’t jibe with other people’s opinions, but these are my recommendations. There are jumpers who prefer these ropes. The following explains why I’m not a fan:
- Leather:It’s weighs too much and doesn’t give enough, making it hard to get a flow going. It also tends to stretch, which is not a desirable quality.
- Rope:This material ends up being so lightweight that I can’t get my flow started. I advise you use other fabrics instead of this one.
- Beads:Only good if you are jumping freestyle in front of people. They are heavy and it is difficult to gain speed with them. Pro jumpers like them, but they look great jumping with any type of rope. I wouldn’t use these if I were you.
- Weighted:These are exercise jumping ropes designed to give you a resistance workout. In my opinion, this contradicts the purpose of jumping rope, which is developing quickness, strength, and endurance. Weighted jumping ropes put the focus on rotating the rope and not stopping when it gets hard, which it does because it’s more difficult to maintain rotation. Instead of using weighted ropes, use ankle weights or wrist weights. That way, you can develop quickness and resistance in a more efficient and sensible way.
Jumping Rope Stiffness
Experienced jump ropers also need to factor in cord stiffness. Stiff cords (such as cables) do not give way much. The result is that the jumping rope won’t naturally shift when being used. That’s okay for experienced jumpers who want the rope to follow their jumps without alterations. What it also means is that the jumper must be perfect while they are jumping. Less experienced jumpers need a jumping rope that moves and extends, which will allow the rope to be flexible enough to be corrected when needed by the jumper.
Selecting the Correct Jumping Rope Handle
Besides the fabric, the rope handles are the biggest consideration. In the current marketplace, you can select from a wide range of handles. You can find small and fat handles, small and skinny handles, tall and skinny, and there are handles that have odd shapes.
While the width, height, or fabric are very important considerations, the handle weight is also extremely critical. You will want to buy a rope with a very light handle. Weightier handles will prevent your jump roping from achieving the desired speed.
Another selection criterion is the handle fabric. It is easy to understand that your rope won’t last long if you jump on hard surfaces, but your handles can also break down, usually at the ends. Inexpensive plastic handles bend when you put pressure on them, while the ends will crack and tear off with only several months of steady use.
A better handle is one made of unbreakable plastic or lightweight aluminum. They cost more but they also are longer lasting. I think they are the worth extra money.
There is a process to determining the proper length of your rope handle. The grip will need to extend around two inches or a little more. Therefore, while determining the handle size, subtract those inches from the overall length. The resulting amount will be the length of handle left for you to hold.
There are three standard lengths:
Long handles are very useful when trick jumping. Lengthier handles provide more rope to use while crossing. A good way to vary your routine while adding tricks to your repertoire is to select a medium long rope (4”) or longer (6” to 7”). I use long handles when I jump.
If you are a beginner just looking to jump rope, use a medium handle length, which is the prevailing standard. The medium length is what you will find encounter with most standard jumping ropes.
For jumpers seeking a different rope that jumps faster, try using a shorter handled rope. Usually, the fancier skipping ropes or ultra-fast ropes are made with shorter handles.
Handle and Rope Connects
Jump ropes connect to the handle in three ways:
- Regular Connection(The rope fits right into the handle)
- 90◦ Connection(The rope attaches to the handle at a 90◦ This connection promotes faster jumping and less friction)
- Ball Bearing Swivel(A ball bearing fits at the end of the handle, and connects the rope to the handle. This connection provides much less friction, smoother jumping, and increased control)
The regular connection works very well, and is the most common connection on your basic, inexpensive ropes. The 90◦ connection is newer in the marketplace and promote faster jumping. The Ball Bearing Swivel connects comes with the fanciest, priciest jump ropes. They are the best handles, usually costing you $20 to $50 per jumping rope. I use the standard connection handles because I like the feel. That’s my opinion, and I know others will feel differently.
Thick handles provide extra grip, but they are usually heavy and it is almost impossible to do stunts. Thick handles work best for Cross Fit and workout jump ropes and jumpers who are into that niche.
Thin handles work well with speed ropes. They are light and you can swing the jump with considerably more speed.
Medium handles are in the middle of these extremes. Standard, budget-priced skip ropes costing around $7 tend to feature medium handles. I think that medium handles are the wisest choice of all the handle thicknesses.
The Best Jump Ropes
Here my list of picks for best jumping ropes. Keep in mind that I am a jumping rope fanatic, I spend a lot of time jumping rope to condition myself and to do stunts. I am very knowledgeable about jumping ropes, which jumping ropes are great, and which ropes are not great. Currently, I have six separate ropes and I have bought hundreds on jumping ropes. The following ropes are my picks for the best that currently on the market.
The Best Cheap Jump Rope
Boxers Jump Rope
Keep in mind that this rope can be used by everyone. The manufacturer just calls it Boxers Jump Rope.
The Boxers rope is a standard licorice jumping rope with a 90 connection. This rope is proof that an expensive jumping rope isn’t necessary to begin learning about jumping rope and getting great exercise. For maximum versatility, I suggest you buy a licorice/PVC jumping rope that has medium or long handles, which describes the Boxers Jumping Rope. This rope is super versatile and provides conditioning, stamina, coordination, and footwork. It is also an awesome rope for developing your tricking skills.
I have a Boxers Jump Rope, and it’s a great deal for such a solid jumping rope. I really like the somewhat slow, non 90◦ connector that you get with the TKO or AM Pro ropes, or even better, the costlier Buddy Lee Rope Master. The problem is that the AM Pro isn’t sold in the States, and the Rope Master is five times more expensive. Because of the lack of better and less expensive choices, I prefer the Boxers Jump for its low-cost and versatility.
A criticism about the Boxers Rope is that it has short handles, and they are constructed from chintzy plastic that breaks easily when dropped on hard surfaces. Three months after I bought my rope, I dropped the handles on the ground, and around a third of an inch of plastic was knocked off, which made the rope nearly impossible to hold while jumping. Even with the cheap plastic construction, I still recommend this rope because you can’t argue with the $7 price tag.
The Best All-Purpose Jumping Rope
Buddy Lee Rope Master
I not only own this rope, I love this rope. It works for all types of jumping rope activities — ranging from general rope work to targeted training, including Western Boxing, Muay Thai, practicing gimmicks, working on speed jumping, or jumping for fun. The Rope Master is not inexpensive at $27, and the actual rope requires replacement after a time, but it does so much, it’s more than worth buying if you can afford it. There is a Rope Master rope that features an additional cord. It will run you an extra $7. However, you end up with an extra cord, which means you have a ready-made replacement cord, and won’t have to buy one.
Why It’s Better Than the Rest: The Buddy Lee ropes have some of the most recommendations on the market, and it is a solid enterprise, not likely to disappear anytime soon. Buddy Lee himself is world-class rope jumper, and a world-class athlete who won Olympic gold in Wrestling. If you look at his jumping rope videos, you will be amazed at how great he is and that will sell his ropes better than any advertising.
The Rope Master was the standard jump rope at the 2008 Olympic Games, and Buddy Lee uses it in his videos. This jumping rope is extremely well thought of online, and receives the highest recommendations. I have this jumping rope myself, and it’s my all-time favorite. I like it so much that I spent $40 for another one.
The Rope Master is long-lasting, speedy, and a great gimmick rope (although I like other long handled, standard ropes better for pure freestyle tricks). It’s pricey, but you get what you pay for in spades.
If you are looking for niche jumping ropes, below are my picks. If you are looking for certain special uses (like Cross Fit or double unders), one of the ropes referenced in the upcoming special categories might be a better choice.
The Rope Master’s chief flaw is having low-rent swivel bearings, instead of having the much better rust-proof steel bearings. When I lived and trained in Thailand, my Rope Masters bearings completely rusted after six months because of the humidity and the fact I put the Buddy Lee in my gym bag along with my sweaty boxing equipment. The moisture rusted the bearings, causing me to have to purchase replacement bearings.
Another gripe I have is I’m not a fan of the foam grips are always cracking. Even so, I still enjoy and endorse the Buddy Lees. Remember that you will want the bearing joints to avoid dealing with water and moisture, making certain the rope is dried after training, or the bearing will rust and need replacing.
Best Muay Thai Jumping Rope
Some Advice: There are two types of ropes you can buy. You can use a historic Muay Thai routine and buy a plastic jump rope, or use a contemporary method, and practice speed, endurance and footwork. You can jump faster and include additional footwork by buying either the Buddy Lee or Boxers. You won’t lose either way.
Twins Special Skipping Ropes with Wood Handles ($15.95 Standard Price)
Anyone who has visited an old-fashioned Muay Thai gym is familiar with these ropes. Thai fighters use them. They aren’t trying to perfect their footwork and jumping techniques. They are building up their shoulders muscles. The monstrous ropes are ridiculously heavy. They are not my favorites. Instead, I use a boxing skip rope, but there’s no denying their popularity in Thai circles.
Best Boxing Jump Ropes
Some Advice: For boxing jump roping, you can use any decent PVC or Licorice rope. Medium to long handles are preferable, allowing greater flexibility for gimmicks (keep in mind boxers can really jump rope. No self-respecting boxer doesn’t have some jumping tricks up their sleeve). Expensive and overdesigned ropes aren’t necessary. All you need is:
- A Licorice or PVC rope
- Medium-sized cord
- 5” to 7 handles
Ampro Speed Skipping Rope
If you want to skip rope like Floyd Mayweather, you will need the jumping rope he uses which is Ampro Speed Skip Rope.
The downside of buying Ampro is that they are based in the United Kingdom, meaning that it must be imported it to the US if you are stateside, causing a significant price increase.
However, this rope isn’t the only skipping rope out there. You can use any $5 to $10 discount jumping rope will work in its place.
The Ampro Speed can be ordered on Amazon for $33. It costs a lot because Ampro is a United Kingdom company, so their products must be imported from there. However, if you are in the United Kingdom, you can buy it for only $15.
BuyJumpRope Boxer’s Skip Rope
Another option is purchasing the BuyJumpRope Boxers skip rope. It’s inexpensive, let’s you work on your footwork and gimmicks (the rope handles aren’t long, but effective), and it has a 90◦ connection that promotes rapid jumping.
Best Jump Ropes for Cross Fit Workouts
Cross Fit devotees can’t get enough of the extra fast, speed jumping ropes. I have a speed rope, but I have trouble doing gimmicks with its extremely tiny cable, and if you mess up, (or even worse, not have a top on and it hits you your upper half) the hurting is real.
Even so, the Cross Fit style cable ropes are the finest for achieving pure speed, and for raising your heart rate with double and triple unders. The Cross Fit ropes are nicely constructed with wire cables covered in regular plastic, hard plastic, and or metal handles that come with ball bearing or 90◦ connects.
I provide two recommendations for Cross Fit jumping ropes. Remember that they will also work very well for fast rope jumping or overall jumping, meaning that they are not exclusive to Cross Fit-related use. However, don’t use these ropes for freestyle jumping. For that, you should use another kind of rope.
Elite Surge Speed Rope
Someone conducting research in the Cross Fit community or asking around at sporting gear stores will find that this jumping rope is extremely popular. The Surge Speed is a cable with a bearing system that allows significant speed. Executing double and triple unders will be easy with this rope.
The Elite Surge skips smoothly. It is an awesome rope for fast skips, or burning tons of calories by skipping at such fast speeds.
The Elite Surge is an extremely capable CrossFit jumper that has gained great popularity for its speed. Double unders jumpers have excelled at competitions using the Surge, some of them jumping with this rope have gotten up to seven jumps a second. Its handles come with specialized ball bearing construction that provide time saving and effortless spins.
RX Jumping Rope
The RX is an extremely popular jumping rope enjoyed by Cross Fitters. It generates excellent speed and works very well performing double unders. Selling for $40 or more, it is quite pricey. The Elite Surge mentioned earlier cost half as much, and provides the same attributes, therefore, you will have to decide if it is worth spending more money for the RX. Despite the price, you could discover that you prefer the RX.
I purchased the RX a while back, and discovered that I didn’t care for the cable style with a 90◦ connection. It could have been because I wasn’t good enough at jumping, and I had not been attending Cross Fit trick workouts. After using it for several months, the rope has become knotted and crimped. This could have happened because I’ve been making the mistake of carelessly throwing it into my workout bag, and after doing it enough times, the rope is bent.
The RX jump rope has been very well received in the Cross Fit community. Overall, it gets great feedback if you research it on the internet. It may provide you with years of use if you are more careful with it than I was.
Best Freestyle Tricks Jumping Ropes
Buddy Lee Rope Master
Buddy Lee has generated lots of buzz with his Rope Masters ropes. His rope jumping videos are impossible to miss if you are into jump ropes, or if you have ever watched any jump roping videos. As an Olympic Gold Medal wrestler, he has become a well-known jump rope trick innovator. His rope jumping abilities are insane!
Buddy Lee has developed a line of high quality jump ropes, and his ropes are the finest on the market. You should buy a pair if you don’t mind the cost.
They are certainly not cheap. His top-of-the-line ropes cost from $30 to $50. However, if you are serious about becoming a jumping rope savage, and want to learn how to execute major rope gimmicks you should buy a pair of Buddy Lee ropes. I have dropped the cash, and bough the Jump Rope Master Freestyle, so I’m not asking you to do something that I’m not willing to do. The Rope Master is the rope I jump for my boxing rope and gimmick training.

The rope itself is a source of controversy (There are users who have had trouble with the rope breaking when it shouldn’t. I have not had this problem), but you can always switch out the rope that comes with the handles and exchange it for your own. Speaking of the handles, they are fantastically smooth, extremely comfortable handles. The Aero Speed is an optimal jumping rope.
